Summer Associate Program
The Summer Associate Program is designed to be our Firm's primary hiring tool for new attorneys. Most graduates hired by our Firm worked for at least one summer as a Summer Associate. This is important due to the small size of our Firm and the need for all the lawyers to be able to work together comfortably and efficiently. For this reason, our Summer Associate Program is designed to provide the most realistic view as possible of life as an associate at our Firm.
Summer Associates are intentionally assigned projects from different practice areas of our Firm to expose them to these different practice areas and to give them an opportunity to work with as many of the lawyers in our Firm as possible. Summer Associates will attend hearings on motions, trials, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, transaction closings, client conferences, and any other out of office events available to show them the different aspects of the practice of law. We also organize several social events for the Summer Associates and their families during the summer to give them the same social interaction with the lawyers that is typical between the lawyers in our Firm.
The number of Summer Associate positions available each summer is determined by a realistic evaluation of our expected hiring needs for new associates for the year that those students will become lawyers. This typically results in one or two first-year Summer Associate positions and one or two second-year Summer Associate positions each summer. Summer Associates are hired to work for up to a six week period that usually falls in the second half of the summer.
We solicit resumes, transcripts and cover letters from all interested first and second year law students for our Summer Associate Program. For first-year law students, these materials should be sent by late January or as soon as possible after receiving first semester grades. Second-year law students should send these materials by mid August or immediately after the start of their second year of law school. Law students at schools where we conduct on campus interviews should submit their resumes and transcripts to their Career Service Office for forwarding to our Firm in advance of our on campus interviews and in accordance with their school's requirements.
We conduct on campus interviews at the University of Alabama School of Law and at Cumberland Law School. First and second-year law students at these schools should check with their Career Service Office for the deadlines to submit materials and for the interview dates. On campus interviews are usually in early February for first-year law students and in September for second-year law students. We will make arrangements to interview students from other law schools after reviewing their resume's and transcripts around these same dates.
